Meet local artist and CFAER Art teacher John Burtle!

John first came to the Center through Needle in a Haystack, an exhibition about how art functions in society that debuted at the Center in 2009. John and his collaborator John Barlog collected ingredients from Eagle Rock residents that were then used to create an Eagle Rock Community Soup for the opening of the exhibition.

John studied art at Cal Arts and sculpture at U.D.K. in Berlin. He has been exhibiting internationally since 2006. His individual studio practice includes drawings and sculptures focusing on physical and emotional feelings. Some of his current projects include shows on KChung Radio (Chinatown radio station) and the Eternal Telethon which is a live broadcast fundraiser that features an array of artists raising money for an artist retirement home.

During Art Camp at the Center, John teaches gardening, cooking, and fort building. He creates social situations for campers to collaborate with one another. John also teaches visual arts in the CFAER after school program.

John loves CFAER’s range of programming. “It truly has something for everybody, from the art exhibitions, the music festival, film screenings, readings, education programs… I am continually amazed by how wide and diverse of an audience the Center supports”.
