Terra Firma

Center for the Arts Eagle Rock and 5790projects present the pop-up group exhibition

Terra Firma,

featuring LA-based sculpture artists Sarah Jones and Meghan Smythe.

Produced in tandem with the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock’s concert series, the opening reception for Terra Firma will also include live musical performances from:

Dylan Ryan Sand

Filardo

Corey Fogel

The artists featured in “Terra Firma” explore the organic, earthly, and petrified textures inherent to their materials. Using elements such as clay, glass, sand, and stone, Jones and Smythe articulate the intricacies and imperfect elegance of terrestrial existence. Often referencing issues of mortality and archive, both artists create three-dimensional works that appear as fossilized remains of modern civilization, or otherworldly relics. Human bones, arrowheads, boulders, and land strata are re-imagined through a chromatic lens, thusly alluding to a romanticized past already in motion.

5790projects focuses on providing a pop-up exhibition platform for emerging artists based in Los Angeles. The artists included in Terra Firma encompass a diverse miscellany of practice and exhibition history. Jones received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (IL), and has since had exhibitions in Los Angeles, Memphis, Chicago, and Houston. Smythe received her MFA from Alfred University (NY), and was the most recent Ceramic Visiting Artist for the California State University, Long Beach (CA). Both of the artists live and work in Los Angeles.
