Making Faces

For four weeks in February, students in the Making Faces Portraiture Workshop were asked to reimagine face-making through drawing, painting, and sculpture with Teaching Artists Jolene Fernandez and Diego León. They explored foundational art skills, what it means to capture the essence of a face, and discovered the unique closeness that comes with documenting life through a screen.

“My approach has been to be as open as possible, to try to relax, and let go of expectations. Making faces has meant looking in a new way at line, shape, light, shadow, and color. “

— Carolyn Kim

“To me, faces are ‘looking into another’s character and soul’, observing their distinctions, their countenance, human beauty, whether it’s pristine, or war-torn, fragile or very strong.“

— Linda Johnstone Allen

“This class has taught me to trust the process of making faces and keep trying… that it’s okay to get your hands messy sometimes and that you can create something amazing if you put your mind to it. “

— Marley Mell

“I wanted to take this art class because I love to draw realistic faces. From this class I learned how to use charcoal for drawing faces, how to use clay to make a good face, and oil pastels. “
